Microsoft Frontpage Support
WEBster Computing Services servers offers full support for Microsoft
FrontPage (versions 98, 99, 2000 and 2002) and its server extensions on
all servers. Future versions will be added as our staff clears them for server use (noting
that initial releases usually take up to a year to de-bug safely).
Please note that versions are backward compatible, so you can use a newer
version of the software on a server that is supporting an older version!
Microsoft FrontPage is a software package for Windows 95 and Windows
NT. It was originally developed by Vermeer Technologies, and then bought
out by Microsoft.
Microsoft FrontPage is used to develop and manage Web sites. It is generally
considered one of the better Web site management packages available. Because
some of its advanced capabilities require server-side support, its "Server
Extensions" must be installed into your account before you can make use
of those advanced features. If you do not need features such as fill-out
forms, discussion forums, or searching, the Server Extensions are not required.
To use Microsoft FrontPage without the Server Extensions, visit the Microsoft
Web site for their Free Publishing Wizard.
Our FrontPage configuration has these features:
-
You can administer your own "Root Web" in your domain
-
You can create "Sub Webs" at any time, without a server restart
-
2.5Mb of your disk space is consumed by the server extensions
-
Each "Sub Web" takes only 10Kb of disk space
-
Password protection is fully operational
-
There is never any need to wait for a server restart!
-
Your files remain under your own ownership, and are not vulnerable to modification
by any other FrontPage user
To use FrontPage and the Server Extensions with your account, you must:
-
Have any account except STARTER/STARTERplus.
-
Have a fully functional real domain name such as www.yourname.com.
-
Run FrontPage with your dial-up connection active.
-
Use the "Open Web" command, specifying your full domain name as the "Web
Server", with the www. prefix!
Once you have successfully opened your "Root Web", you are free to use
all of the features of FrontPage. You can create "Sub Webs" at any time
(each requires about 10Kb of disk space). When you do so, FrontPage will
warn you that the Web server needs to be restarted. Please note that we
do not provide technical support or guidance for FRONTPAGE. It is up to
the individual user to learn this system if needbe.
How to change your frontpage password:
in the
frontpage "Tools" menu, choose "Change Password."
Enter
your old password, and your new password
twice.
Frontpage installation request: ($15 installation fee applies to
accounts active more than 2 weeks)
Note that frontpage can not be added to starter and starterplus class
accounts. Contact us to upgrade your
account before requesting frontpage setup if you own one of these account
types.
